Hope is here

I have an inspiring book to share with you.  And, true to it's name Hope Was Here, it will fill you with hope for our wonderful human race.

Joan Bauer's young adult novel is so special that Saginaw, Michigan chose Hope Was Here for a city-wide read during the summer and fall of 2002 to help the town heal after a series of tragic deaths of several high school students in car accidents.

The heroine of this story, Hope Yancey, is as plucky as they come - and wise beyond her years.

There is plenty to ponder as you enjoy a slice of the life of a teenage waitress...sometimes with humor...

"Bill collectors are like cheap tippers -- they always leave bad feelings behind."

Sometimes with great insight...

"You know what I like most about waitressing - When I'm doing it, I'm not thinking that much about myself.  I'm thinking about other people.  I'm learning again and again what it takes to make a difference in people's lives."

You will meet other interesting and enjoyable characters as you experience this novel;  and a town election and a bit of mystery will keep your interest peaked.

This book is not only special for the young adults it was written for but for adults of all ages.  It will open up plenty of topics for discussion and leave a wonderful taste in your mouth.

Here is a website that has a study guide for Hope Was Here:

  1. I think that The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot is wonderful. It's a touching and shocking story, and the author is so sincere and wrote beautifully. My book club read this one, and then we got to see the author speak on campus for her book tour.
